EXIF removal questions

Everything you need to know about metadata cleaning.

What is EXIF metadata and why should I remove it?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) data is hidden information embedded in photos by cameras and phones. It can include GPS coordinates revealing where you took the photo, your camera/phone model, timestamps, and even your name. Removing it protects your privacy before sharing online.

What data does EXIF contain that could be dangerous?

EXIF can expose: GPS location (your home, workplace), date and time of photos, device serial numbers, camera settings, software used, and sometimes your name or copyright info. Stalkers and bad actors can use this to track you.

Does removing EXIF change image quality?

We re-encode the image to strip metadata while preserving visual quality. The image may be slightly recompressed, but the difference is imperceptible for typical photos. File size often decreases slightly.

Is my data safe? Are images uploaded anywhere?

Your images never leave your device. All EXIF removal happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. We never see, store, or transmit your photos. This is 100% private and secure.

Can I remove EXIF from multiple photos at once?

Yes! You can drag and drop multiple images or upload a ZIP archive. Folder structure is preserved when you download the cleaned files as a ZIP.

What image formats are supported?

JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, and HEIC are fully supported. These are common formats that can contain metadata. GIF files typically don't have EXIF data.

Do social media platforms remove EXIF automatically?

Some platforms like Facebook and Instagram strip EXIF when you upload, but not all do. Twitter, forums, and messaging apps often preserve metadata. Always clean images before sharing to be safe.

How can I check if EXIF was removed?

After downloading the cleaned image, you can use online EXIF viewers or your computer's file properties to verify all metadata is gone. The cleaned files will show minimal or no EXIF data.

Need compression too?

Use the main NanoJPG compressor for WebP, JPG, and PNG outputs.
